"Spiritual direction is, in reality, nothing more than a way of leading us to see and obey the real Director – the Holy Spirit hidden in the depths of our soul."
-Thomas Merton, Trappist monk, USA
Spiritual direction is an ancient practice of the church, one that today is seeing a rebirth in protestant church circles. A spiritual director is not so much someone who "directs," but rather someone who listens and helps hold space for a "directee" to see and hear God in their own lives. Spiritual directors ask good questions and are there to be a companion in joyful moments, humdrum sort of days, and times of deep heartache and hardship.
Through Raising Micah, we provide spiritual direction to individuals and families as well as help parents act as spiritual directors, per say, for their children. Rev. Chamie Delkeskamp is completing her final hours of coursework towards full certification in spiritual direction through Stillpoint: The Center for Christian Spirituality based in Pasadena, CA. Families, moms, or children who might be interested in meeting with her can email Chamie at revchamie@mac.com or call 805-300-3456. We can also refer you to other spiritual directors. Typically, a spiritual direction session lasts for about an hour and you may meet with a spiritual director once every 3 to 6 weeks. For more information about spiritual direction, go to www.thecsd.com/spiritual_direction.html.
A wonderful book for families that helps to open one up to the art of spiritual direction - but more importantly, the work of the God - is Sleeping With Bread: Holding What Gives You Life by Dennis, Sheila, and Matthew Linn. You may find the book to be a helpful tool for reflecting at the end of each day where you have seen God at work. |
